When Mary Frakes began taking regular walks for
exercise in 1997, she just wanted to get in shape. She never dreamed her
walks would lead to a new way of looking at the world — and herself. "I discovered that the benefits of walking were
even greater from the neck up than they were from the neck down,"
says Frakes. "Most books about walking have very good instructions
about how to walk for exercise. But with all the demands on us today, most
people need to slow down mentally as much as they need to speed up
physically. And the books usually don’t help your brain benefit from
your walk as much as your body." Frakes has designed walking workouts for Family Circle and Walk Off the Weight. MindWalks has also been featured by Self, Woman's Day, McCall's, Natural Health, Walking Magazine, the Prevention Walking Club, and About.com. MindWalks techniques have been adopted by the wellness programs of corporations, institutions, and spas nationwide. More than three million Americans know Frakes as the
founding editor of the award-winning Stages, a personal finance
magazine, where she helped demystify personal finance and investing for employees of Fortune 500 companies. Her writing has appeared in Life, Travel and
Leisure, Elle Decor, Yankee, CNBC.com, CFO, Boston Magazine, Boston
Business Magazine, American Craft, Harvard Magazine, The Boston
Globe, and Bostonia. A native of Memphis, Tennessee, she lives
in Cambridge, MA.
